FBI investigates use of Morcellator device
There are an estimated 60,000 hysterectomy procedures using a morcellator device annually. Traditionally, hysterectomy surgery removes the uterus in one piece; however, a power morcellator has small blades that cut the uterus into small pieces allowing it to be removed through the smaller incisions a laparoscopic surgery provides.
Unfortunately, when the device was used on women who had undiscovered uterine sarcoma cancer, it had the effect of spreading cancerous tissue throughout the abdomen and pelvis. Recently Johnson & Johnson removed their device from the market, although other models made of other companies are still available.
In a recent article published by CBS NEWS we’ve learned that the FBI is investigating the use of Morcellator devices in hysterectomy surgeries after one of the affected patients became an outspoken critic of the device. Dr. Amy Reed is a medical professional and a mother of six. She underwent a hysterectomy with a morcellator device and her follow up appointment showed she had cancer that had spread through her abdomen. She reached out to the FBI and has been interviewed several times since 2013.
While this is encouraging news and validation for patients who have suffered the devastating effects of cancer spreading due to the use of this device it is also frustrating to know that the medical community has been aware of the risks since its release into the market. Now the FDA is encouraging doctors to seriously weigh the risk associated with its use since one in 350 women undergoing a hysterectomy or fibroid removal will have an unsuspected type of cancer or uterine sarcoma.
If you need to undergo a hysterectomy you should consult with your physician about the benefits and risks associated with this device and discuss the different options available to you.
